Stop Talawanda School District
Your Oxford Tax
         Dollars at Work

As early as March 3, 2009, the
Talawanda School District
approached the City of Oxford,
asking that the City fund off-site
infrastructure at the new high
school.

Keep in mind that other properties
annexed to the City have to pay for
all improvements.

While several options have been
discussed, the draft pre-annexation
agreement contains the following;

The City will pay for a new water
line to the site, and will pay to
increase the size of the line, if
needed.

The City will pay to construct
sidewalks north of University Park
Boulevard and on the west side of
US 27 to Chestnut Street.

The City will pay for a traffic
signal, if needed, at University Park
Boulevard and US 27.  It now
appears that multiple signals may be
needed and the signal at Chestnut
and Patterson will have to be
improved, at City expense.

If you live in the Talawanda School
District, you now have some of the
highest property tax rates in Butler
County with the addition of the 4.7 mill
levy last November.

Annual Tax Distribution

General Fund             $ 153.27          4.55%
Mental Retardation     $ 189.32         5.62%
Miami Conservancy    $    2.39            .07%
Mental Health             $  92.77          2.75%
Children Services        $ 152.80         4.53%
Senior Citizens            $   92.07         2.73%
Talawanda Csd          $2,220.77      65.91%
Butler Tech Jvs           $  154.06        4.57%
Oxford Township        $   19.16          .57%
Oxford City                 $ 291.37        8.65%
Assessments                $     1.46          .04%
Total                          $3,369.44

As you can see, the School District gets
the majority of the taxes, more than 7
1/2 times as much as the next highest
recipient and almost twice as much as all
of the other recipients combined.

This does not include the 1% School
District income tax...
and it is likely
that the School District will want an
operating levy in 2011 or 2012.

Your School District at Work

Beginning in 2005, the Talawanda School
District has been active in contesting almost
350 property values used to determine
property taxes.

The Butler County Auditor is required by
law to notify school districts when a
property decreases in value by $50,000 or
more.  On April 1, 2009, Talawanda asked
their attorney for an opinion on pursuing
ALL properties that decreased in value.

In 2005, Talawanda School District actually
started the complaints against property
owners whose property values were
decreased by the Auditors Office.

In June 2008, when our campaign began,
Talawanda and Lakota School Districts
were only districts in Butler County who
were counter claiming lowered property
values.

To quote Talawanda School Superintendent
Dr. Phillip Cagwin,  “We’re not trying to set
the property values,”  “We simply want to
make sure they’re being assessed fairly.”

We will soon have an Excel spreadsheet on
this site which will include both the 2007
and the 2008 property values on properties
being counter claimed by TSD.

Until then,

TSD has filed countercomplaints against.
